The 2008 World Championships held between the second and the fifth of May were hailed by many as being the finest ever. This was in some measure I feel due to the fine weather we all enjoyed, the wonderful competitive spirit of those taking part, and the enthusiasm of those supporting the races.
These Championships were not without their problems. The mechanical breakdown of our Islands freight ferry and the relocation of the venue to the Rachabite boat park caused some difficulty. I make no apology for yet again praising the efforts of those in the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and the officers of the Isles of Scilly Council for their assistance in overcoming these problems.
The Committee have now held their debrief meeting during which several proposals for improvements were made.
I have received only one suggestion from competitors for improvements, which suggests that we are largely getting it right. However we shall not be complacent and will seek to continually improve the experience for the teams competing. Should any club or individual taking part have any suggestions to make please do not hesitate to e-mail me.
Congratulations to the ladies in the Irene Too from Falmouth and the men in Kensa from Mounts Bay on their hard won and well deserved victories, and my thanks to all the competitors and supporters that made this such a memorable year.
Kind regards
