NEW FLYING SCHOOL BUILDING
For those of you who haven’t visited us for a while, the biggest change is to the premises. Following weeks of refurbishment to the old café, the flying school moved its operations early this summer. A great deal of effort went into maintaining the ambience that the old building provided, but without the draughts! Besides the great view, the new building boasts facilities such as, internet connection for up to date weather, chart table and the all important tea and coffee making area. The period Lloyd Loom chairs from the old building made their way to Sussex for complete restoration, before taking their place in the new school. Although the old building is sure to be missed, all the comments received regarding our new home have been extremely favourable. Make it a priority to visit us soon, and see for yourself. We promise you our traditional warm welcome!
NEW FLYING INSTRUCTORS
Some of you may be aware that our CFI Sheila Trickey has now left the Company. Sheila has been instructing with us for almost a decade. We wish her all the best.
Land’s End Flying School welcomes two new members of staff. We welcome our new CFI and chief pilot Mark Hillier. Mark is a pilot with ‘Skybus’ our sister company, and is also an experienced instructor and examiner. He has worked for many flying schools throughout the country and has already examined some of our students for their PPL Skill test. He is also the ground examiner.
Our replacement for Karl Hebron, who is leaving for a job with Air South West, is Ben Woodward, FI®. Our best wishes go to Karl & Ben for their future flying careers.
EXERCISE 'LYONESSE'
On Wednesday 2nd of November 2005, Exercise ‘Lyonesse’ was held at Land’s End airport. The exercise was set up to test the response and coordination between the Land’s End internal emergency services and the coastguard, 771 Squadron, police, ambulance, fire brigade and others. The exercise simulated two incidents involving a Twin Otter and Cessna 172 crashing on and near the airport.
The outcome of the live exercise was very positive. The Civil Aviation Authority attended the exercise and were very complementary about the performance of the airport staff, particularly the fire crew. All the other ‘Blue Light’ services involved were equally positive about the outcome. In all over 140 people including company staff took place in the exercise.
The planning for the exercise took two years. The lessons learnt from it will be very valuable and will result in positive changes being made to our procedures. Hopefully we will never have to respond to an emergency of this magnitude, but in the event we will now be much better prepared.
