AERO CLUB EVENTS
We had a successful summer Fly In on Sunday 27th July. Lots of members enjoyed the afternoon sunshine and BBQ. Phil Bowles was the winner of the spot landing competition, with Michael Stock second and David Rowe third.
The British Women Pilot’s Association enjoyed a fly away to Land’sEnd at the beginning of September. Aircraft arrived from Eaglescott, Plymouth and Liverpool and stayedlocally for one night to enjoy the cuisine and beautiful views that only Land’s End can offer.
MICROLIGHT BLOWS OVER A strong wind turned over this Quantum microlight that had stopped for fuel while returning to its Western Zoyland base from the Isles of Scilly, the fire crew were quickly in
attendance helping both occupants to escape unhurt. The aircraft was pushed back to
the hangar (no mean feat in the strong wind and it still took six people to hold it down)
where an engineer inspected the aircraft and advised the pilot on the damage. The
aircraft was towed back to it’s home base on a trailer.

their support for the campaign to save our local
hospitals by towing the banner pictured right around
Penwith. It was timed to
coincide with the start of
the protest march in Hayle
that involved thousands of
people supporting the
cause.
PICTURES FROM THE PAST
June 1937– Site preparation for a
new Aerodrome is completed at a
site located between Little
Kelynack and Brea Down – just
south of the town of St. Just. The
site consisted simply of the field
(with 2,100 ft runway), a 4,080 sq
ft hanger (transported from
Squire’s Gate Aerodrome,
Blackpool), a booking office, fuel
store and basic servicing facilities.
The Aerodrome quickly became
known as Land’s End.
Photographed next to the terminal
is one of three De Havilland
Rapides (G-AHLL) that was used on
the route between Land’s End and
the Isles of Scilly.
1965 -A new airline, Scillonia Airways, was formed by Capt. Neely
and based at Land’s End. The company acquired Rapides GALGC‘Bishop’, GAHAG ‘Bryher’, GAHGC‘Tresco’, GAJCL ‘Samson’ and GAHKU a second ‘Bishop’.
1966 June – Scillonia commenced
its first scheduled service between
Newquay, Land’s End and St. Mary’s
while pleasure flights were also undertaken, generally from Land’s End
