The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company (ISSCo) is committed to delivering a resilient, reliable, affordable and accessible service for people who need to travel to and from the Isles of Scilly and the mainland. We take our responsibilities very seriously and understand that thousands of people are reliant on our ability to deliver effective transport services throughout the year.
In recent weeks, the ISSCo has been contacted by members of the public who are interested to learn more about how we support people with medical appointments on the mainland.
The ISSCo is contracted by the NHS to provide transport services to individuals with medical appointments on the mainland. The NHS has access to the ISSCo’s website and is provided with a credit facility to make bookings for patients.
One of the main ways we help people with medical appointments is to provide heavily discounted fares. For example, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the ISSCo provides significantly reduced fares for NHS patients having to travel to and from the mainland for medical appointments. Over the last 12-months, the ISSCo has helped 2,826 NHS patients with their medical appointments.
The ISSCo also provides a critical stretcher transport service which sees one of our 4BN fixed-wing Islander aircraft converted to take a specialised stretcher. This is a special charter service we provide to the NHS at a heavily subsidised rate.
For passengers with mobility challenges, the ISSCo pays for the training of all our staff and fire crew to handle the delicate operation of helping patients into the aircraft.
To ensure the needs of patients are being met, the ISSCo also works with Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust to offer a customer focused service to patients.
Finally, so that the views of patients are embedded in our future transport plans, the ISSCo also attends monthly meetings with key stakeholders, including Isles of Scilly Health Watch who monitor patient transport to and from the Islands.
