Work to improve the hangars at Land’s End Airport is progressing well, with the first two phases of the project completed ahead of schedule and already delivering benefits for the engineering team.
The Hangar Improvement Project is being delivered across three phases, upgrading the existing eastern and western hangars and extending the western hangar to provide improved facilities and working conditions.

Two phases completed ahead of schedule
The first phase focused on the eastern hangar, with work commencing on 22nd June and completing on 12th July. The project was delivered ahead of schedule, allowing the engineering team to begin using the improved hangar from 20th July.
Attention then turned to the western hangar, where refurbishment began on 20th July and was completed on 22nd August. Again, the work was delivered ahead of schedule, with engineers able to occupy the hangar from 25th August.
As part of this phase, a new link tunnel was also constructed between the two hangars. The tunnel provides easier access between areas and helps protect staff and equipment during poor weather. It also enables the engineering team to maintain optimal working conditions without having to open the hangar doors in wet or cold conditions.
Work begins on the western hangar extension
With the first two phases complete, work is now underway on the third phase of the project, with the western hangar extension and its new doors.
Significant preparation has already taken place, including drawings, council permission, Civil Aviation Authority permission, steel drawings and fabrication.
Construction of the western hangar extension started on 14th September, beginning with groundworks. This includes diverting an existing drain, installing a new ACO drain and excavating foundations for the new steel column concrete pads.
Once the groundworks are complete, the next stage will see the steel framework erected, followed by the installation of a new concrete slab to match the existing hangar floor. External cladding will then be added, along with new windows and a pedestrian access door.
The new hangar doors are expected to be installed in mid to late November, with final floor painting and sealing work planned for the following week.
Together, the three phases will provide the engineering team at Land’s End Airport with upgraded, modern and professional facilities and a hangar that enables our larger twin-otter aircraft unobstructed access and better access between working areas and improved protection from the elements to support the day-to-day work that takes place behind the scenes at the airport.
