From Scillonian III to Scillonian IV

A visual journey through nearly 50 years of change

Scillonian III and Scillonian IV may look very different, but they share a familiar purpose: connecting Penzance with the Isles of Scilly.

Nearly 50 years separate these photographs, offering a glimpse at how the vessels and the experience onboard have changed over time.

Scillonian III entered service in 1977 and has carried more than five million passengers. In 2027, Scillonian IV will take to the route, bringing a new look and feel to the journey while continuing a tradition that has been part of island life for generations.

On the water

From the classic lines of Scillonian III to the more modern design of Scillonian IV, the difference is easy to see.

Scillonian IV has been designed with space and comfort in mind, with capacity for up to 600 passengers and modern facilities for the journey to Scilly.

Interior comparison

Step inside Scillonian III and you can see how the spaces onboard have changed over the years.

From her original interiors to the familiar passenger areas seen today, the spaces have evolved alongside the way people travel. Looking back at photographs from different points in her history gives a glimpse into what a journey on Scillonian III has looked like over the decades.

Scillonian IV will bring a brighter, more contemporary feel, with larger windows, lighter passenger areas and comfort at the heart of the design.

Looking back and looking ahead

Scillonian III has been part of island life for nearly 50 years, carrying generations of passengers between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly.

For some, she’s been part of a first trip to the islands. For others, she’s been part of a family tradition, a regular journey or simply the start of a much-loved holiday. There are countless memories tied to her decks, from sunny summer crossings to the excitement of spotting the islands on the horizon.

As we look back at how much has changed over the years, it’s lovely to see that one thing remains the same: the journey between the mainland and the islands.

In 2027, Scillonian IV will begin her journey, ready to welcome a new generation of passengers and create plenty of memories of her own.

The vessel may look different, but the destination is still the same.
