We want to make your journey as smooth and comfortable as possible – and that starts with knowing exactly what you can bring with you.

Hold luggage

Luggage allowance

  • Allowance per person: 2 pieces
  • Maximum size: 85 cm × 60 cm × 40 cm
  • Maximum combined weight: 25kg*

All luggage is loaded by hand into containers for the voyage. To ensure safe handling, please avoid using oversized or difficult-to-carry cases or bags. No single piece should exceed 20 kg.

Once loaded into our containers luggage cannot be accessed again until it’s been unloaded after arrival at the vessel’s destination.

Luggage labels

Collect a luggage label on the quay for your hold luggage, it must be clearly labelled with your:

  • Full name
  • Booking reference
  • Mobile number
  • Home address
  • Holiday address (leave blank if collecting hold luggage from St Mary’s quay – see luggage transfers)

Penzance luggage drop-off point

The luggage drop-off point on Lighthouse quay closes 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. You’ll need to show your boarding pass or booking confirmation before your luggage is placed in the containers provided.

St Mary’s luggage drop-off point

If you are dropping off your hold luggage at the quay, please do so between 10:00 – 11:00 or 15:00 – 16:00 on your day of departure. You’ll need to show your boarding pass or booking confirmation before your luggage is placed in the containers provided.

Compliance checks

Spot checks will be conducted on Scillonian hold luggage.

Day Trip Passengers

Day trip tickets do not include a hold luggage allowance.

Hand luggage

Luggage allowance

Maximum weight: 5kg

Allowance per person: 1 piece

Maximum size: 40 cm × 55 cm × 20 cm

A camera bag and a laptop are accepted as hand luggage in addition to the 5 kg allowance.

Excess luggage

Any luggage that exceeds your allowance must be booked and paid for ahead of travel. Failure to book in advance may result in your luggage being refused.

You can book excess luggage online when making a Scillonian III booking or add it later via ‘Manage my booking‘.

Luggage transfer (Island Carriers, St Mary's)

On St Mary’s we can deliver and collect your hold luggage to and from Scillonian III for a small charge per item.

To use this service on your luggage label make sure you complete where you are staying (holiday address) on St Mary’s then we’ll automatically drop your luggage off and leave an invoice.

If you would like your luggage collected to go back on Scillonian III or you need to pay an invoice, please get in touch with Island Carriers:

If you are staying on Bryher (green), St Agnes (yellow), St Martin’s (red) or Tresco (blue) you will need to attach the relevant colour label to your hold luggage and place it in the correct luggage container at the luggage drop-off point. The labels can be collected from the quay in Penzance.

Please note: Your Scillonian III booking only covers travel and luggage from Penzance to St Mary’s quay. If you are staying on Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin’s or Tresco travel is charged separately via local inter-island boats.

Freight

All freight items must be booked in advance of your departure due to limited space on Scillonian III.

You can book freight online when making a Scillonian III booking or add it later via ‘Manage my booking‘.

Please note:

  • Non-standard items such as musical instruments and fishing rods are classed as excess luggage. 
  • All freight items must be must be appropriately packed and are shipped at the owner’s risk.
  • We cannot transport batteries or electric bikes if the electronics have been modified or altered.

Penzance freight drop-off point

The freight drop-off point on Lighthouse quay opens 2 hours 45 minutes for 30 minutes before the scheduled departure, this is usually between 06:30 and 07:00. You will need your booking confirmation ready when you arrive.

Please contact our Travel Centre if you want to check the freight drop-off opening times for your sailing.

St Mary’s freight drop-off point

You can drop off freight at St Mary’s Quay throughout the day. The drop-off point closes 1 hour 15 minutes before Scillonian III’s scheduled departure and is unavailable while the ship is docking. This is usually between 12:00 and 14:00. You will need your booking confirmation ready when you arrive.

Staying on Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin’s or Tresco

If you are travelling with freight please contact our Travel Centre in advance to arrange onward transport from Scillonian III.

Please note: due to tidal conditions, same-day delivery cannot be guaranteed.

What to do if your luggage is damaged during transit?

Reporting baggage damage

Any damage to your baggage must be reported to a member of our staff before leaving the quay. To make a claim for compensation, you must contact us within 7 days of your flight. When submitting your claim, include the following documents:

  • Proof of purchase, including age and model of the bag
  • A valuation for repair or a comparable replacement item
  • Any photos you have taken of the damage

Exemptions

We will not consider claims for damage to hold baggage in the following cases:

  • Missing zip locks or straps
  • Damage to protruding parts of the suitcase or bag (these parts are easily damaged during transportation)
  • Cosmetic damage, such as scuffs, dents, marks, or normal wear and tear, that does not affect the bag’s usability
  • Damage to handles or wheels
