The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has today reiterated its commitment to work with all parties to ensure a robust and sustainable transport system for the Isles of Scilly.
The pledge follows a decision by Cornwall Council earlier this month to approve plans to build a new heliport in Penzance.
The heliport will operate in competition with the Steamship Group’s own air and sea services to the islands, which it has provided for almost 100 years.
Group Chairman Andrew May said: “We accept Cornwall Council’s resolution to consent Penzance Heliport. We made clear our reservations over the potential long term implications of this outcome, but now the decision has been made it falls to all of us to work together for the benefit of the islands and everybody choosing to travel to and from Scilly.
“For our part we remain focused on providing a robust, resilient, affordable and sustainable transport system by air and by sea that meets the needs of islanders and visitors year-round. That includes significant ongoing investment to maintain, upgrade and replace our assets.
“For the good of the islands, the transport debate must now move forwards in a positive and constructive way. We look forward to being part of that.”
