The journey between Penzance and St Mary’s Harbour is one that we’ve been making for nearly a century, but the views, the wildlife and the ever-changing Atlantic ensure it’s a journey that never gets old.

Our passengers upload some fantastic photos of their journeys with us- just look at our Pinterest board! Using their photos as inspiration, we’ve put together the top 10 things we love about the experience of travelling to Scilly on the Scillonian.

1) Penzance Harbour
With cafés, pubs and restaurants just a short walk from the harbour front and a train service direct from Paddington, Penzance is a lovely place to start your holiday adventure. If you’re staying in the area before travelling with us, be sure to check out The Minack Theatre in Porthcurno. It’s a beautiful stone amphitheatre carved into the cliff side, with an incredible story behind it.

2) The crew

We’re lucky to have a lovely, friendly crew on board the Scillonian. While safety is their main priority, they’re always happy to point out any sea-life they spot along the way. You can find out more about our Chief Officer, Matt Wheeler, here.

3) The ship’s heritage

We’ve been transporting people to and from Scilly by ship since 1920. The first of our Scillonian passenger ships was built in 1925.

4) Taking your dog!
You can treat your canine companion to a holiday for just £5 each way – find out more here.

5) The wildlife
Dolphins, whales, seabirds and even a leatherback turtle have been spotted from the deck of the Scillonian. Keep your eyes peeled!

6) Paul Semmens

During the summer months Paul Semmens,  our Marine Wildlife Guide travels with us taking note of the marine life he spots along the way. You’ll often find him surrounded by tourists, telling them all about the seabirds and dolphins.

7) Landmark spotting
On a sunny day the views from the deck of the Scillonian are sensational. As you leave Penzance Harbour look out for St Michael’s Mount, The Minack and the fishing villages of Newlyn and Mousehole. When the ship passes Wolf Rock Lighthouse you’ll know you’re almost there!

8) The destination
What a beautiful collection of islands! And what an entrance! Depending on the tides you may be able to spot St Helen’s and Teän, two of the uninhabited islands. You can also look out for the white-sand beaches of St Martin’s – it won’t be long before you’re there with an ice cream in hand!

9) The sunsetsblog image
If you’re lucky enough to be returning to Penzance during one of the West Country’s spectacular sunsets, be sure to head onto the deck to watch the entire sky turn orange.
