Things to see and do on Bryher

Walk at your own pace

Walking around Bryher is easy enough for most. But to really understand the island’s highlights, you might like a guided tour from local resident Chris Potterton. The famous novel When the Whales Came is set on Bryher, a climb up to Samson Hill is sure to leave you inspired.

Pop-up experiences

The Crab Shack at the Hell Bay Hotel only serves crab, mussels and scallops: The pop-up style restaurant opens during the summer season, serving delicious crab, lobster and mussels from the islands’ shores. It’s fun, informal, and enjoyably messy… not to mention popular.

Explore the coves and bays

Hire a motor boat or catamaran, a sailing dinghy or a kayak from the island’s boatyard, and you’re ready to explore the waters around Bryher. You can find an island of your own or hire a line and fish from your boat – all under the watchful eye of a regular safety patrol.

Visit the art studio

Richard Pearce was born by the sea and is best known for his seascape paintings. His studio is a converted gig shed, overlooking Great Bay. His paintings capture the magical beauty of the islands, look out from the studio and it’s easy to see where he finds his inspiration.

What to do on Bryher Island?

In the summer, Bryher may look more like heaven – with Atlantic waves lapping the edges of the cove, and sandy beaches fringing the grass and wild flowers. But come here in a storm, when the breakers sweep in from the ocean and meet the first land for two thousand miles, and you’ll see Hell Bay is aptly named. And it’s one of the contrasts that makes Bryher so unique.

It's contrasted by the sheltered channel between Tresco and Bryher with several sheltered beaches and coves, the other side is the wild and rugged Shipman’s Head renown for its big seas and exposed cliffs. As Scilly’s smallest inhabited island, walking around Bryher is easy and accessible for most people.
